A Houston father, Fernando Vega, faces capital murder charges following the tragic deaths of his twin daughters, Massail and Mirena. The six-week-old infants were found unresponsive in their home on October 4, 2023. If convicted, Vega could potentially receive the death penalty, according to reports from Daily Mail UK.
Initially arrested on April 19, Vega had faced charges of causing serious bodily injury to a child alongside the twins’ mother, 21-year-old Angelina Belinda Calderon. However, as the investigation progressed, authorities determined that Vega was allegedly solely responsible for the girls’ deaths, leading to the more serious charges.
When police arrived at the residence on Linden Creek Way, they discovered the twins lying on a couch. Observations revealed concerning signs, including discolored skin, bruising, and one infant with noticeable fractures. Medical examinations indicated that both twins had been discharged from the hospital without adequate medical attention and were malnourished.
Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, found multiple indicators of prior abuse during his examination. This included evidence of dehydration, bruises, and fractures. Alarmingly, one twin exhibited signs of acute brain bleeding and spinal cord injuries, suggesting recent trauma.
During a court session, prosecutor Edward Appelbaum emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the twins’ deaths before finalizing any murder charges against Vega. As the case continues to unfold, Vega remains in custody, awaiting trial and further legal proceedings.
