The Federal Government has suspended 13 students from Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu following a recent bullying incident that was widely circulated on social media. In the viral video, a group of students was seen physically assaulting an SS1 day student on November 7, 2024. Responding to the incident, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa expressed serious concerns regarding student safety and discipline, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure learning environment in federal schools.
In an official statement, signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations for the ministry, Dr. Alausa directed the school’s management and the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to collaborate with security agencies on a thorough investigation. This probe will examine any potential links to outside groups and work toward a full understanding of the incident.
The statement clarified that immediate steps are being taken to bolster security at the school, including partnerships with law enforcement and a review of current safety protocols. According to Dr. Alausa, the Ministry of Education is determined to restore peace and safety at FGC Enugu and to assure parents and the public of a safe educational environment for all students.
The disciplinary response involves placing the 13 students on a six-week suspension, during which a full investigation will continue. In addition to the suspension, Dr. Alausa announced that counseling and rehabilitation programs will be implemented, offering students support to overcome behavioral issues and promoting their reintegration into a healthier school environment.
The Minister called on all relevant parties—parents, school staff, and security forces—to collaborate in addressing student safety and cultivating an environment that supports the well-being and development of all students. The Ministry is resolute in its commitment to taking whatever steps are necessary to protect students in all federal institutions across Nigeria.
