FG Dissolves Nnamdi Azikiwe University Governing Council, Removes Vice-Chancellor Over Legal Violations

… removes Odoh as VC, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe as pro-chancellor

…also lays off other governing council members

The federal government has dissolved the governing council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, citing legal violations and disregard for directives from the Federal Ministry of Education. As part of the decision, Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe has been removed as Pro-Chancellor, alongside council members Hon. Hafiz Oladejo, Hon. Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.

Additionally, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Odoh, has been dismissed due to his “illegal appointment” by the now-dissolved governing council. The government plans to appoint an acting vice-chancellor and reconstitute the governing council to restore proper governance and compliance with the institution’s founding act.

In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the government revealed that the council chairman had unilaterally appointed Prof. Odoh despite his failure to meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the role. This unlawful action reportedly caused significant tension and disharmony within the university.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the urgency of the measures to prevent further instability at the institution. He stated that the illegal decisions by the dissolved council posed a serious risk to the university’s governance and overall well-being.

The statement further underscored the federal government’s commitment to ensuring accountability, good governance, and adherence to the rule of law within Nigeria’s educational institutions. All changes are effective immediately, with steps underway to restore stability and order at the university.
