Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for civil servants, raising it from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000. The governor made this declaration during a late-night meeting with leaders of various labour unions at the Government House in Owerri. This wage review also extends to other sectors: doctors will now receive a minimum wage of ₦503,000, up from ₦215,000, while lecturers in tertiary institutions will earn ₦222,000, up from ₦119,000.
Governor Uzodimma explained that this decision comes in response to the economic difficulties that Imo citizens and workers have faced over the past few years. These include the COVID-19 pandemic, persistent insecurity, the economic impact of subsidy removal, and disputes over worker compensation. He emphasized that no government can succeed without maintaining a healthy and respectful relationship with organized labour.
Uzodimma underlined the importance of fair remuneration, noting that well-paid workers contribute positively to economic growth, productivity, and social stability. He described the wage increase as an investment in the people of Imo, and part of his broader strategy to stimulate political and economic activity within the state.
The governor also reported that Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) had grown significantly—from ₦400 million to over ₦3 billion monthly. He said the state’s federal allocations had risen from ₦5–7 billion in 2020 to ₦14 billion, while its debt profile had dropped from over ₦280 billion to below ₦100 billion. Infrastructure, especially roads, has also received attention as part of his administration’s rebuilding efforts.
In line with ongoing reforms, Uzodimma announced that the government will commence payment of ₦16 billion in outstanding gratuities to pensioners beginning August 27. He also highlighted initiatives in healthcare, business development, and civil service reform, including participation in a federal initiative to create 1,000 businesses in each INEC ward.
Labour leaders expressed appreciation for the wage increase. Mr. Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, hailed the move as a major victory for Imo workers and affirmed that the governor had acted fairly. Mr. Uchenna Ibe, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), also praised Uzodimma’s political will and commitment to improving worker welfare.
