The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised concerns over the persecution of Hon. Amobi Ogah, a member of the House of Representatives, allegedly orchestrated by the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. The association claims that Onyejeocha, who lost the 2023 election to Ogah, is seeking revenge through false charges filed by the Attorney General’s office, including false declaration, perjury, and criminal defamation.
HURIWA argues that the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who served as Onyejeocha’s legal counsel during the election petition proceedings, has used his office to further the personal vendetta. The association condemns the involvement of the Nigeria Police Force in the framing of Hon. Ogah, describing it as a “colossal disgrace” and a threat to democracy.
HURIWA warns the Minister of Justice to desist from using his office to further Onyejeocha’s vendetta, emphasizing that such actions undermine the Nigerian Constitution and pose a threat to multi-party democracy. The association urges relevant authorities to investigate the activities of the AGF’s office and vows to protect Hon. Ogah from what it views as a politically motivated witch-hunt.
The case highlights concerns about the abuse of power, corruption, and the manipulation of the justice system for political gain in Nigeria. HURIWA’s stance emphasizes the need for an independent and impartial justice system to ensure the protection of human rights and the rule of law.
