Imo Police Detain Father and Son for Allegedly Burning Kinsman Over Theft Accusation

The Imo State Police Command has detained a man, Obinna Obiekea, also known as Losky, and his son, Chidubem Obiekea, for allegedly killing their 35-year-old kinsman, Chima Okafor. The incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Nnebugwu autonomous community, Oguta Local Government Area, Imo State, after accusations that Chima had stolen a pair of jeans valued at N25,000.

Reports revealed that Chima was attending a crossover service at a Cherubim church when the suspects dragged him out, assaulted him, and set him ablaze. According to Chima’s father, Uche Okafor, the attack was carried out by Obinna, his wife Nwamaka, and their sons, Eloka and Chidubem. “They accused my son of stealing jeans, dragged him to their compound, beat him with weapons, and set him on fire,” Uche recounted.

Despite efforts to save him, Chima succumbed to severe burns after being rushed to the Congregation of the Poor Handmaid of Jesus Christ Hospital in Mgbele, Oguta. Uche has appealed to authorities, including Governor Hope Uzodimma and President Bola Tinubu, to ensure justice for his son. While Obinna and Chidubem are in police custody, Nwamaka and Eloka remain at large.

A police source confirmed that the case has been transferred to the homicide section of the State CID in Owerri for further investigation. Autopsy arrangements and court preparations are underway. Henry Okoye, the state police spokesperson, assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and that all culprits would be brought to justice.
