Jonathan Decries Betrayal in Nigerian Politics, Hails Oghiadomhe’s Loyalty at 70th Birthday Celebration

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has lamented the prevalence of dishonesty and disloyalty in Nigeria’s political space, describing it as a system heavily marked by betrayals and falsehoods. He made this remark in Benin City, Edo State, during the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and one-time deputy governor of Edo State, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe. The event was well attended by notable dignitaries, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Osarhiemen Osunbor, Adams Oshiomhole, Ibrahim Dankwambo, and several other political leaders.

Speaking at the occasion, Jonathan praised Oghiadomhe for being a rare and trustworthy ally. He reflected on his years in office and after leaving power, stating that Oghiadomhe has remained one of the few friends whose loyalty has never wavered. According to Jonathan, Nigerian politics is often dominated by betrayal, with many politicians saying one thing in the morning and the opposite in the evening. He recalled the 2015 elections as a particularly painful period when he experienced numerous betrayals. In contrast, he described Oghiadomhe as a dependable confidant who could even “take a bullet” for him.

Representing Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo at the ceremony, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa acknowledged Oghiadomhe’s enduring impact on governance in Edo. He noted that the structures Oghiadomhe helped to build during his tenure as deputy governor still guide the state’s administration today. Former Governor Lucky Igbinedion also spoke, recounting how he trusted Oghiadomhe fully with the affairs of the state whenever he traveled abroad.

Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, in his goodwill message, further highlighted Oghiadomhe’s loyalty, revealing that he had always pledged his political alignment with Jonathan wherever he went. He also praised Oghiadomhe’s wife, Louisa, for being a steadfast and supportive partner throughout his political journey.
