Lagos Government Denies Role in Alleged Demolition of Property Linked to Peter Obi’s Brother

The Lagos State Government has publicly distanced itself from the controversial demolition of a property alleged to belong to the brother of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. In an official statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the government described Obi’s claims as “unverified” and “misleading,” asserting that no agency under the state’s authority was involved in the said demolition.

“The Lagos State Government is compelled to address the recent allegations made by Mr. Peter Obi regarding the demolition of a property belonging to his brother,” the statement read. Omotoso emphasized that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) did not participate in the demolition, nor did any other affiliated agency.

To reinforce this point, the Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, who directly oversees LASBCA, confirmed that the agency had no involvement in the matter. The government suggested that the claims by Mr. Obi may be politically motivated, especially in the lead-up to the local government elections.

“We find it disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts,” Omotoso said, urging the public not to be misled. He stressed that the state government remains committed to lawful governance and would hold any individual or entity accountable if found guilty of unauthorized actions.

To further investigate the situation and uphold transparency, the government has instructed the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahun Owodunni Oki (FNIA), to conduct a thorough investigation via LASBCA. This probe aims to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the demolition.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the government’s dedication to safety, inclusivity, and fairness, assuring residents of all political backgrounds that their rights will be respected and protected in Lagos State.
