Mbah Transforms GTC Enugu with World-Class Facilities for Skill Acquisition

Since the assumption of office by Governor Peter Mbah in May 2023, the Government Technical College (GTC) Enugu has witnessed a new wave of transformation aimed at repositioning the institution as a hub for technical education and skill acquisition. Known for decades as one of the foremost technical schools in the South-East, GTC Enugu had long grappled with infrastructural decay, outdated equipment, and dwindling student interest. However, Governor Mbah’s administration made it a priority to revive the college, aligning with his broader vision of preparing the state’s youth for the modern workplace through vocational and technical training.

Under his leadership, major renovation and re-equipping projects commenced, targeting workshops, classrooms, and laboratories. The governor emphasized that technical education should no longer be treated as a second option, but rather as a critical driver of innovation, industry, and entrepreneurship. This approach has gradually restored confidence among parents, students, and education stakeholders who now see GTC Enugu as a model institution.

As part of this renewal, a contractor identified as Patient, who was engaged to handle the garment-making section of the college, recently showcased some of the facilities installed. The garment laboratory is now fitted with world-class machines designed to give students hands-on experience in garment production. Alongside the practical section, a theory lab has also been equipped with desks and smart screen televisions for online and blended learning.

Reports from a staff member who led a tour of the school revealed that classrooms are furnished with laptops, ready for immediate use as teaching resumes. She commended the governor for his efforts, noting that the investment reflects a deliberate strategy to make GTC Enugu a true center of skill acquisition. According to her, the intention is for 70 percent of the knowledge acquired at the college to be focused on practical skills—ensuring that graduates leave with the ability to create, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to industries.

With these interventions, Government Technical College Enugu is steadily regaining its reputation as a cradle of craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, and technological competence in Enugu State.
