Monday Okpebholo Sworn in as Edo Governor, Obaseki Reflects on Transformative Tenure

Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially been sworn in as the sixth elected governor of Edo State, with Hon. Denise Idahosa as his deputy. Okpebholo emerged victorious over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in the state’s September 21 gubernatorial election. The inauguration ceremony, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, saw the attendance of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led the Federal Government delegation. Notable APC leaders and governors, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Hope Uzodinma of Imo, and Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, joined Shettima in celebrating the event. APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Ganduje and Senator Adams Oshiomhole were also present.

During the event, Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, administered the oath of office to Okpebholo, who was accompanied by his two daughters. The deputy governor, Dennis Idahosa, took the oath with his wife by his side.

Meanwhile, in a prior address, outgoing governor Godwin Obaseki reviewed his administration’s achievements over the last eight years, highlighting innovations across various sectors. Obaseki said his tenure, beginning in 2016, aimed at transformative reforms rather than continuing with established systems. His administration introduced major advancements in education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure, laying a foundation for sustainable growth.

Obaseki’s achievements included constructing over 850 kilometers of roads and generating nearly 1,000 MW of electricity daily. In education, over 15,000 teachers received training, positively impacting the learning of nearly 400,000 students, which he noted positioned Edo as a model for educational reform in Africa. He also tackled human trafficking by enhancing vocational training, creating jobs, and reintegrating over 6,000 returnees.

Obaseki’s healthcare improvements were marked by upgraded facilities and an insurance scheme covering more than 300,000 residents. The revitalization of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital exemplified his administration’s healthcare strides. Additionally, his security initiatives, including a community-led network, made Edo one of the safest states in the South-South region.

Obaseki’s agricultural initiatives transformed Edo into a leading producer of palm oil and cassava, creating thousands of jobs and improving food security. His focus on technology established innovation hubs, providing opportunities for youth and aiming to reduce irregular migration.

Looking forward, Obaseki highlighted a comprehensive development blueprint for the state, aimed at sustaining growth over the next 30 years. He attributed his administration’s success to collaborative efforts with stakeholders and urged Edo citizens to remain optimistic about the state’s future. He thanked supporters for embracing his vision of a progressive Edo State.
