The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has highlighted the crucial role its members play in the country’s economy, stating that they are responsible for creating eight out of every 10 jobs in Nigeria. This statement came during the 4th annual NECA Employers’ Excellence Awards held in Lagos, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing a more business-friendly environment for the organised private sector (OPS).
NECA’s Director General, Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, explained that the awards were designed to celebrate businesses for their resilience, innovation, and significant contributions to the nation’s development. He emphasized the importance of addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, and governance issues. Oyerinde also pointed out the need for deeper collaborations with international organizations like the Centre for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to ensure responsible business practices that align with legal standards.
The awards also served as a platform to recognize companies that have persevered despite Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions, as well as those that have unfortunately exited the market in the past year. Oyerinde stressed that the award has become a benchmark for corporate excellence, celebrating businesses that prioritize employee welfare, diversity, and sustainability while navigating tough economic terrain.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Lagos State’s Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, praised NECA for its legacy of fostering enterprise competitiveness and promoting industrial harmony. The governor acknowledged the resilience and determination of Nigerian employers to overcome obstacles, continue creating jobs, and drive national development. He assured continued government support for businesses through investments in infrastructure, security, and technology.
At the awards, MTN Nigeria, Fidson Healthcare, and Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) were named Employer of the Year, with Dangote Industries Limited and Nestle Nigeria receiving special recognition for their resilience and contributions to sustainable development.
