The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims regarding a viral video circulating on social media, which allegedly shows police officers in camouflage uniforms siphoning petrol from a truck involved in an accident. The footage, initially recorded in November 2022, resurfaced recently and triggered criticism from Nigerians, who condemned the supposed act as dangerous and unprofessional.
In a statement released on Monday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that the individuals depicted in the video are not members of the Nigeria Police Force. According to Adejobi, the personnel are from a neighboring francophone country, and their camouflage uniforms only resemble those of Nigerian police officers. He further noted that the language spoken in the video is French, rather than English or any Nigerian language, thereby dismissing any association with the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement emphasized the detrimental effects of spreading unverified and misleading content, asserting that such actions aim to tarnish the image of the force and undermine its integrity. Adejobi stated, “The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to professionalism, discipline, and the safety of Nigerians under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police. We strongly condemn any attempt to discredit the force through misinformation.”
The police urged Nigerians to be cautious and verify information before sharing it online, emphasizing the importance of protecting the credibility of public institutions that strive for national safety and unity. Adejobi added that fostering trust in these institutions is critical to their effectiveness and the nation’s overall well-being.
This clarification serves as a reminder of the need for responsible information-sharing practices to avoid spreading false narratives that could harm public confidence in security agencies.
