Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically passed away after collapsing in the ring during a fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Ghana on March 29, 2025. Olanrewaju, who was facing Ghanaian fighter John Mbagunu, also known as “Power,” in an undercard match of the Ghana Professional Boxing League, suddenly fell to the canvas mid-fight. This prompted the referee to immediately signal for medical assistance.
A viral video from the event showed both fighters exchanging heavy punches, with Olanrewaju appearing to stagger before collapsing and hitting his head on the ring. He was swiftly taken to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. While the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, reports suggest he may have suffered a cardiac arrest during the fight.
Born in Lagos, Olanrewaju had an impressive boxing career, with 23 professional bouts, winning 13, including 12 by knockout. Despite his recent struggles, having lost his last four matches, Olanrewaju was a well-respected figure in Nigerian boxing and had previously held the National and West African light-heavyweight titles. The Ghana Boxing Authority is expected to release an official statement, while tributes for the fallen boxer continue to pour in.
