Nigerians to Pay More for Passports as NIS Implements New Fees from September 1, 2025

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed an upward adjustment in the cost of acquiring a Nigerian standard passport, with the new charges set to be implemented from September 1, 2025. This update was disclosed in a statement released on Thursday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACI Akinsola Akinlabi, through the agency’s official X handle.

According to the revised structure, the cost of obtaining a 32-page passport with a five-year validity will now stand at ₦100,000, while a 64-page passport with ten-year validity will cost ₦200,000. Previously, the 32-page document was priced at ₦50,000, after an earlier increase from ₦35,000. Similarly, the 64-page passport with ten-year validity rose from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000 before this new review.

The adjustment, however, applies only to passports issued within Nigeria. Nigerians in the diaspora will continue to pay the existing fees of \$150 for the 32-page, five-year passport and \$230 for the 64-page, ten-year passport, with no change announced for them.

Explaining the rationale behind the review, the NIS noted that the move was necessary to sustain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while also ensuring that services remain efficient. The agency emphasized its dedication to striking a balance between delivering high-quality services and keeping passport access available to Nigerians across the board.

Reiterating its position, the Service stated that the increment was essential to meet growing demands, maintain global standards, and protect the credibility of the Nigerian travel document. It assured citizens that despite the upward review, it remains committed to making passport services both reliable and accessible.

This development marks the latest in a series of adjustments to passport fees in recent years, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade service delivery in line with international practices.
