The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu State, Frank Nweke Jr, has vowed that as Nsukka zone (Enugu North) provides 60% of the total votes in the state and hosts a number of comparative advantages that can accrue to the State, it deserves much attention hence his government would ensure it gets more.
Nweke made the pledge in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State where a crowd of excited residents gathered to hear his vision for rebuilding Enugu.
Nweke, who lamented the visionless-ness of the PDP-led administration in the state said that his government would leverage the opportunities in Nsukka, especially the presence of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, which hosts a teeming population of young people.
He said he would pay attention to attracting businesses that would invest and create jobs for the teeming youths. He also plans to expand the cooperation between the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to make it fit for economic purposes as well as encourage collaboration among tech companies and traders and other interest groups.
“We will encourage the development of the enabling environment and support Nsukka’s emergence as a vibrant commercial hub, with UNN at the centre. Our plan is to link the university to other educational institutions in its sphere of influence and to the local economy via businesses and industries. Our research and development departments will be productively engaged to provide solutions for the local economy and attract national and global attention.
“We will facilitate the presence of technology companies to provide the digital infrastructure needed to support the growing tech hubs and promote innovation amongst our young people. We will also introduce Connected and Innovative Learning Centers (CILC) in rural areas to encourage digital literacy and make it accessible to all.”
He said that his administration’s approach will not be to recruit praise singers in the guise of providing jobs, but will take full responsibility to create an enabling environment for industries and companies to come in, invest and create jobs for the teeming youths.
“It is regrettable that for the lifespan of the present administration that has spanned over 7 years, no single industry came to set up in Enugu. This will change with immediate effect under my administration” he said.
