Over 30 Graves and Shrine Discovered in Hotel, Leading to Demolition in Anambra

Tensions have erupted in Oba, a community in Anambra State’s Idemili South Local Government Area, following the discovery of over 30 graves and a shrine at a hotel in the area. The hotel, known officially as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites and informally called La Cruise Hotel, was demolished on Saturday after the state’s newly established security outfit uncovered its illicit activities.

The authorities acted on a tip-off from a whistleblower and intelligence gathered, which led to the raid of the hotel located along the Onitsha-Owerri Road. During the operation, security personnel discovered over 30 well-partitioned graves in the hotel’s basement, along with a shrine, military camouflage, and various weapons including arms and ammunition. However, it remains unclear whether any bodies were recovered from the graves or if arrests were made, as the authorities have not provided further details on the matter.

Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Community Security, declined to comment when contacted, referring inquiries to the governor’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime. The Press Secretary confirmed that the hotel was indeed demolished as part of Anambra’s Homeland Security Law, which mandates the demolition of buildings linked to criminal activities like kidnapping. Aburime stated that the raid was prompted by credible information about the hotel’s involvement in illegal activities, specifically its connection to kidnappers and other criminal elements.

In a statement posted on Anambra State’s official New Media account, it was revealed that the hotel, also known as La Cruise Hotel, was believed to be a hub for criminal operations. The statement also confirmed the discovery of the graves and shrine at the site. Aburime added that investigations are ongoing and more details will be shared in due course.

The community had mixed reactions to the demolition. Some residents expressed shock and concern about the existence of similar establishments in the state, urging the government to take swift action. Others called for more thorough investigations before such drastic measures were taken. One local who witnessed the demolition expressed disbelief at the findings, while another speculated that the so-called graves might have been fish ponds instead.

Meanwhile, another security operation was carried out in the area on the same day, where the Agunechemba Security Squad raided a brothel in Akwu-Ukwu Oba, also in Idemili South. The operation led to the arrest of two suspected kidnappers and five prostitutes. The building was demolished in line with the same security laws, with authorities vowing to continue pursuing other members of the criminal gang.
