Overhaul the Chaos: Emeka Odom Calls for Fresh Traffic Management System in Enugu

——- Says the current system is outdated and no longer capable of handling the city’s increasing vehicular pressure

A Public Affairs Analyst and Member, Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria, Enugu State Chapter, Emeka Odom, made this known while speaking on a topic “The State Of The Nation,” on Freedom Square, a programme on Solid FM, 100.9, anchored by Uchenna Cyril Anioke.

Odom, called on the Enugu State Government to urgently redesign and modernize its traffic management operations to ease congestion and improve road safety across the state.

He expressed concern over the growing traffic disorder particularly in Enugu metropolis, where poor road coordination, and ineffective traffic control have continued to frustrate motorists and pedestrians alike.

According to him, “ It is all about planning, let them go to the drawing board. Let them redesign the traffic flow so that even if construction is going on, we do expect that more construction will come. When it comes , that good thing doesn’t become an avenue for people to start talking as if construction has become a bad thing. Let them redesign this thing. That you want to cure a situation does not mean that people must get to the land of the dead first before they come alive . That could be very dangerous.”

He emphasized that a redesigned traffic management structure should include trained personnel, technology-driven coordination, synchronized traffic lights, improved road markings, and a more proactive enforcement framework.

“Enugu is expanding rapidly, and our traffic system must evolve with it, a modern city cannot run on obsolete methods. The government needs to adopt smart traffic solutions that prioritize safety, efficiency, and order.” he stated

He urged the government to partner with urban planners, transport experts, and relevant agencies to develop an integrated traffic management blueprint that aligns with Enugu’s long-term development goals.

Odom therefore called for public awareness campaigns aimed at educating road users, noting that effective traffic management is a shared responsibility.
