President Tinubu Approves Lavish Retirement Benefits for Nigerian Army Generals

President Bola Tinubu has approved an extensive retirement package for Nigerian Army service chiefs and generals, as part of the newly harmonized terms and conditions of service for officers and enlisted personnel. Signed on December 14, 2024, the package includes numerous benefits designed to support retiring senior military officers in their post-service lives.

Key provisions include a bullet-proof SUV, to be replaced every four years and maintained by the military, and a Peugeot 508 or an equivalent vehicle as a backup. Retiring service chiefs will also receive domestic support, including two cooks, two stewards, a civilian gardener, a security officer, and special assistants. They are further entitled to $20,000 annually for medical treatment, both within and outside Nigeria, as well as up to three service drivers and nine soldiers for security.

Major generals and brigadier generals will also receive significant benefits. Major generals are entitled to $15,000 annually for medical care, a Toyota Land Cruiser or its equivalent, and domestic aides such as cooks and stewards, alongside residential guards. Brigadier generals will receive $10,000 annually for medical treatment, a Toyota Camry or its equivalent, and similar domestic and security support.

The generous packages have drawn criticism from various professional associations, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). Critics argue that the funds allocated for foreign medical allowances could be better invested in improving Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure. Despite the backlash, the retirement benefits aim to provide senior military officers with a smooth transition after years of dedicated service.
