Support Staff Protest Looms as Decade-Long Grievances Go Unaddressed

Support Staff Protest Looms as Decade-Long Grievances Go Unaddressed: Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited (WRPCL) support staff have written an

open letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, decrying their poor working

conditions and calling for a review of their remuneration package.

The letter, signed by representatives of the support staff, details their grievances,

including the lack of basic allowances, insurance coverage, and pension benefits.

The support staff claim that despite their dedication to the Quick-Fix Project,

which aims to revamp the Warri Refinery, they have been met with neglect

and disregard by the NNPCL top management. They allege that the recent

advertisement for experienced hires, with a maximum age limit of 37, is a

deliberate attempt to edge them out.

The letter highlights the support staff’s contributions to the refinery’s operations,

maintenance, and sustainability, and demands recognition and fair treatment.

They threaten to embark on a planned protest on August 19, 2024, if their demands are not met.

The support staff are seeking the Senate President’s intervention to address

their plight, including the approval and implementation of a remuneration

package commensurate with industry standards and the absorption of at least

50% of support staff in the ongoing recruitment exercise.

The letter paints a picture of a disillusioned workforce, feeling exploited

and undervalued, and seeking redress for their grievances. The Senate President’s

response to this appeal may determine the course of the planned protest

and the future of the support staff at WRPCL.
