Rivers Administrator Seeks More Time from National Assembly Amid Fragile Security, Emergency Rule

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has appealed to the National Assembly’s Ad-hoc Committee for more time to prepare a comprehensive update on the state’s current political and security situation. He made this request during his appearance before the committee at the National Assembly on Friday, emphasizing the complexity of governing under the ongoing state of emergency.

In his address, Ibas acknowledged the vital role of the committee in maintaining democratic and constitutional order across the country. He began his remarks by expressing appreciation for the leadership of the committee and recognizing its responsibility in protecting the nation’s democratic principles.

Ibas also addressed his earlier absence from prior committee sessions. He explained that his inability to appear sooner was not due to neglect or disrespect but was instead caused by pressing demands tied to the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. He clarified that the time between the initial invitation and his appearance included public holidays and weekends, which limited available working days.

Highlighting the fragile state of security in Rivers, Ibas stressed that although the situation appears calm, it remains delicate and needs careful management. He insisted that proper communication with the committee must be well-prepared, accurate, and thoughtful. Therefore, he appealed for patience and a time extension to allow the state administration to compile a thorough and detailed report.

Ibas reiterated his commitment to working collaboratively with the National Assembly and pledged to provide all necessary information to the committee. He concluded by expressing appreciation to the lawmakers for their understanding and also extended gratitude to the media for supporting federal efforts during this challenging period.

The committee is expected to review Ibas’s request for additional time before making further decisions on how to proceed with its oversight duties in Rivers State’s transitional administration.
