The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, threatening to expel him from the party if the ongoing political crisis in the state is not resolved. The party accused the former governor of engaging in multiple anti-party activities, which, according to PDP officials, warrant either his suspension or expulsion by the party’s relevant organs.
During a press conference held in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the acting state chairman of the PDP, Robinson Ewor, criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling that recognized the defection of Martins Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ewor dismissed the court’s judgment, claiming it was legally flawed, particularly regarding the defection of the lawmakers. He stated that since Wike is serving in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, his loyalty lies with the APC, not the PDP. Ewor emphasized that any actions that bring the party into disrepute constitute anti-party activities, and Wike’s actions, in his view, have done just that.
The PDP chairman made it clear that the party would take appropriate action when the time comes, including suspension or expulsion, depending on the severity of Wike’s actions. Ewor also noted that the PDP had evidence, including affidavits and public announcements, that prove the lawmakers’ defection to the APC, which contradicts the Supreme Court’s decision.
Furthermore, the party praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his dedication to implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling for the benefit of Rivers people. However, they urged the 27 defected lawmakers to reconsider their positions for the state’s welfare. In conclusion, the PDP appealed to Wike to allow peace to prevail in the state, enabling Governor Fubara to focus on governance.
