Sadiq Abacha Defends Father’s Legacy Amid Renewed Criticism Over June 12 Annulment

Sadiq Abacha, the son of Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, has come forward to defend his father’s legacy, insisting that his leadership remains relevant despite continued criticism. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Sadiq suggested that his father was unfairly targeted due to envy and silent betrayal. However, he expressed confidence that history would ultimately recognize Abacha’s contributions and judge him in a more favorable light.

His statement comes in response to the release of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, which has reignited discussions about Nigeria’s political past. One of the key revelations in the book concerns the controversial annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which Babangida acknowledged was won by Moshood Abiola. Babangida claimed that the decision to annul the election was influenced by internal forces within his government, allegedly led by Abacha, without his full knowledge.

Sadiq, defending his father’s reputation, asserted, “The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down.” He further stated that he takes great pride in his father’s legacy and suggested that Abacha’s critics secretly wished they could be like him.

Concluding his post, Sadiq shared a Hausa proverb, “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,” which translates to, “Whoever throws a stone in the market…”—a metaphorical warning that every action has consequences.
