The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken a decisive stance against former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, officially expelling and banning him from any affiliation with the party for the next thirty years. This stern action follows what the SDP describes as a deliberate misrepresentation and manipulation of the party’s identity and procedures by El-Rufai. According to the NWC, El-Rufai has falsely portrayed himself as a member of the SDP despite clear evidence that he never completed the legally required process of registering with his ward in Kaduna State.
In a detailed statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP explained that El-Rufai not only failed to register lawfully but also misled the public by posting on social media that he had joined the party. This misinformation triggered congratulations from party leaders and even a letter of support. However, after a thorough investigation, the party concluded that El-Rufai’s membership claim was fraudulent. He was accused of staging photo-ops with suspended party officials and forging a fake membership registration, claiming to be the first registered member in his ward, which the party says contradicts existing records.
Furthermore, the SDP accused El-Rufai of attempting to use the party’s platform for ulterior motives, including aligning with other political parties through what he called a coalition. The NWC described his activities as destabilizing, alleging that his presence and actions have fueled internal disunity and undermined the party’s structure at all levels. The former governor’s involvement in sponsoring unauthorized party meetings and offering financial inducements was also cited as part of the grounds for his expulsion.
Consequently, the party invoked its constitutional authority to dissociate itself entirely from El-Rufai. He is prohibited from identifying with the SDP’s name, logo, or any of its official activities for a period of 30 years, ending on July 28, 2055. The decision has been formally communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant institutions. The SDP reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, transparency, and principled opposition, stating that it welcomes genuine members who align with its vision of eradicating corruption and poverty in Nigeria.
