Former Abia State Governor and current Senator for Abia North, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has extended his congratulations to Senator John Azuta-Mbata on his election as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. The election, held on Friday at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu, resulted in Azuta-Mbata’s unanimous nomination by delegates from Rivers State. His emergence follows the zoning of the position to Rivers State after the demise of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who previously represented Imo State.
Azuta-Mbata, a notable Ikwerre native and former Senator for Rivers East under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, becomes the first person from Rivers State to lead the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization. His leadership comes at a crucial time for Ohanaeze Ndigbo as it navigates its role in promoting the interests of Ndi Igbo within Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
In a statement on Sunday, Kalu expressed confidence in Azuta-Mbata’s ability to bring significant contributions to the role, citing his vast experience and dedication to public service. He praised Azuta-Mbata’s accomplishments as a businessman, politician, and statesman, noting his commitment to Rivers State and Nigeria. Kalu pledged his full support, emphasizing his belief in Azuta-Mbata’s capacity to advocate for Ndi Igbo and position the Igbo people strategically in Nigeria’s political dynamics.
