The Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia-North) as the substantive inaugural Chairman of the newly established Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC). This commission, part of the Regional Development Commissions signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, aims to focus on the development of the South East. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Prior to this appointment, Senator Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State, served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation.
Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) was also named as the vice chairman of the committee. Akpabio mentioned that the other members of the committee will be revealed at a later date.
As the chairman, Senator Kalu will lead the committee in overseeing the South-East Development Commission’s work, focusing on key objectives such as civil restitution, tackling erosion, improving security, and enhancing infrastructure.
Additionally, 18 members were confirmed for the commission, including Dr. Emeka Nworgu as Chairman, Hon. Mark Okoye as Managing Director and CEO, and several others, such as Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Kzenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, Chidi Echeazu, Ifeanyi Agwu, Nasiru Usman, Hamma Adama Ali, Kumo Edward David Onoja, and Orure Kufre Inima.
Other members include Daniel Akwari, Chief (Mrs) Joke Adebayo-Chukwuma, Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka (E.D. Finance), Chief Sylvester Okonkwo (E.D. Corporate Services), Hon. Toby, Senator Anthony Agbo (E.D. Commercial and Industrial Development), and Dr. Clifford Ogbede (E.D. Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development).
