The Federal Government’s crackdown on illegal mining has led to the arrest of seven individuals involved in illicit gold mining operations in Kogi State’s Yagba East Local Government Area. According to a statement released by Segun Tomori, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, the mining marshals successfully dislodged the illegal miners, who had prevented licensed miners from accessing the site for 16 years.
The operation, led by Commander Attah Onoja, resulted in the arrest of seven suspects heading different groups of illegal miners in the area. Reports indicate that the illegal activities had been ongoing for over 20 years, with the site workers given five days to vacate the area to enable the authorities to secure the site and ensure its recovery for lawful mining activities.
This operation follows a similar one recently carried out in Abia State’s Umunneochi LG, where eight Chinese nationals and a Nigerian were arrested and charged with illegal mining. Their trial commenced last week at the Federal High Court, Abuja division, and they were remanded in Kuje prison until the adjourned date.
The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, under Dele Alake’s leadership, is determined to combat illegal mining and bring perpetrators to justice. The government’s efforts aim to ensure that mining activities are carried out in a legal and environmentally responsible manner, generating revenue and creating jobs for Nigerians. By tackling illegal mining, the government hopes to promote sustainable development and protect the country’s natural resources.
