Sokoto Becomes Pilgrimage Ground for Kanu Supporters – Sowore

—— Says, government underestimated the resilience of Kanu’s followers and the momentum of the movement surrounding his detention.

Omoyele Sowore, activist and former presidential candidate, has criticized the Federal Government’s decision to transfer detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to a prison facility in Sokoto, saying the move has only strengthened Kanu’s symbolic influence rather than diminish it.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Sowore said authorities believed moving Kanu to Sokoto would ridicule him and reduce the attention surrounding his case. The outcome has been the exact opposite.

Sowore explained that Kanu’s relocation has turned Sokoto into a major point of attention, drawing supporters and sympathizers from different parts of the country.

He described the city as having almost become another Mecca, as people continue to gather in solidarity despite the government’s intention to isolate Kanu.

“When they were taking him to Sokoto, they thought they will ridicule him. When he got there, he has turned Sokoto to another Mecca. That’s exactly what we predicted,” Sowore stated.

Sowore also made a pointed remark directed at Justice Omotosho, who is connected to Kanu’s case. In a bold claim, he said he has the capacity to arrange safe access to Kanu for anyone who needs it. “But if he wants to go, tell him to contact me. I will arrange his safe passage to Sokoto,” he stated.

The remarks add another layer of public scrutiny to the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, whose case continues to generate national and international attention.
