The American International School in Abuja has communicated with the EFCC: The American International School of Abuja has requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to furnish them with valid banking information for the reimbursement of fees paid for Yahaya Bello’s children, the former governor of Kogi State. Bello allegedly made an upfront payment of $720,000 from the Kogi State Government’s funds for the education of five of his children at the institution, ranging from Grade Levels 2 to 8.

Following an attempted arrest by EFCC operatives on April 17 at Bello’s Abuja residence over an alleged N80.2 billion fraud, the school sought to refund the sum of $760,910, having deducted charges for educational services already provided, out of the total $845,852 paid in tuition fees from September 7, 2021, to date.

In a letter directed to the Lagos Zonal Commander of the EFCC, the school emphasized the need for an official written request containing accurate banking details to facilitate the refund as part of the ongoing investigation into the Bello family’s suspected money laundering activities. Additionally, the school vowed to notify the anti-corruption agency of any further payments made by the Bello family.

A statement by Greg Hughes, representing AISA, revealed that Ali Bello, purportedly a family member, had contacted the school on August 13, 2021, to arrange advance payment of the children’s school fees until they complete high school.

Earlier, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed that Bello had transferred $720,000 from the state’s coffers to a bureau de change before leaving office to prepay his child’s school fees. Olukoyede criticized such actions, emphasizing the misuse of government funds, especially in a financially constrained state like Kogi.
