The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has expressed disappointment with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of becoming indifferent, insensitive, and unresponsive to the struggles of Nigerians. In an open letter titled “President Bola Tinubu, time is going,” Adams voiced concerns about the economic hardship many Nigerians are facing, stating that the administration has let down the citizens who had high hopes for change under Tinubu’s leadership.
Adams reflected on Nigeria’s abundance of natural and human resources, lamenting how successive leaders since independence in 1960 have mismanaged these assets. He noted that when Tinubu campaigned using the slogan “Emilokan,” many believed his modern governance approach would offer relief compared to the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari, which Adams said had worsened poverty and insecurity.
However, Adams argued that Tinubu’s government has not lived up to expectations, pointing to the skyrocketing prices of fuel and the devaluation of the Naira since Tinubu assumed office. He questioned the economic reforms led by Tinubu’s close associates, Finance Minister Wale Edun and Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso, asking what policies they have introduced that justify these economic hardships.
Adams also raised alarms over the worsening insecurity in the country, with kidnappings and killings increasing even after ransoms are paid. He questioned the effectiveness of the security forces under Tinubu’s leadership and expressed concern about the government’s crackdown on protesters, some of whom have been charged with treason. He criticized the government’s hostility toward civil society groups and human rights activists, contrasting Tinubu’s past as a mobilizer of protests with his current stance against dissent.
Adams further condemned the recent fuel price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which operates under Tinubu’s office as Petroleum Minister, calling it a direct attack on Nigerians. He urged the President and his party to become more sensitive to the economic suffering of the population, warning that the current situation could lead to widespread unrest if not addressed.
