President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating state police formations as part of broader efforts to confront Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
The President made this declaration on Monday night while hosting state governors to an interfaith breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The gathering brought together Muslim and Christian leaders to observe the holy seasons of Ramadan and Lent, underscoring themes of unity, reflection, and shared responsibility.
Addressing the governors at the event in Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Tinubu emphasized that security remains central to his administration’s development agenda. He assured Nigerians that the pledges he made before assuming office in 2023 would not be delayed or abandoned.
According to the President, the solemn period of Ramadan and Lent serves as a reminder that leadership must be guided by conscience and compassion beyond political considerations. He commended the governors for their humanitarian initiatives during the fasting season but urged them to intensify efforts, particularly at the grassroots level.
Tinubu called on state chief executives to pay closer attention to vulnerable populations, including unemployed youths, struggling women, and underserved rural communities. He stressed that development efforts must transcend religious, ethnic, or social divisions, insisting that compassion should not be defined by tribe and opportunity should not be limited by status.
Reaffirming his determination to reposition the country, the President said collaboration between federal and state governments is essential to restoring hope among citizens. He maintained that security is the bedrock of economic growth and national stability, noting that without peace, agriculture, commerce, and family life cannot thrive.
On the proposed state police system, Tinubu described the reform as a practical necessity rather than a political maneuver. He argued that empowering states with localized policing structures would enhance their ability to protect lives and property while still reinforcing national security coordination.
The President concluded by urging unity and bold reforms to address longstanding structural weaknesses. Expressing optimism about the country’s future, he declared that Nigeria would emerge safer and stronger if leaders remain committed to decisive action and collective responsibility.
