Tinubu Selects Governor Dauda Lawal for Nigeria’s Delegation to G20 Summit in South Africa

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has been named among the high-level Nigerian delegation that will accompany President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the 20th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa. The summit, slated for November 22 and 23, will feature participation from six state governors chosen to join the President, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to robust representation at one of the world’s most influential economic and political gatherings.

According to a statement issued by Sulaiman Bala Idris, the spokesperson for Governor Lawal, preparations for the summit indicate that all G20 member nations will be fully represented. In addition to the core member states, the meeting will also host 16 guest countries and six additional nations drawn from regional economic blocs across Africa, the Caribbean, and East Asia. This expansive participation highlights the summit’s growing relevance as a global platform for economic cooperation and strategic dialogue.

The statement explained that Governor Lawal will join his colleagues from Osun, Plateau, Gombe, Katsina, Niger, Enugu, and Nasarawa States as part of the official Nigerian delegation. Their inclusion reflects the broad, multi-level engagement Nigeria hopes to bring to the summit, which serves as the culmination of a year-long series of engagements involving ministerial meetings, technical working groups, and various sector-driven forums.

During the two-day summit, leaders will deliberate across three main sessions covering a wide spectrum of pressing global issues. These include international trade, development financing, and the mounting challenge posed by global debt. The agenda also features critical discussions on climate change commitments, sustainable food systems, equitable energy transition, and the strategic importance of critical minerals to modern economies. Additionally, the summit will explore topics related to decent work and the expanding role of artificial intelligence in global development.
