University of Lagos Left in the Dark as EKEDC Cuts Power Supply

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been plunged into darkness following the disconnection of electricity supply by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) due to outstanding debt. Despite paying N180 million to EKEDC in July, the university was abruptly disconnected from the power supply on August 27 without prior notice.

The university management explained that the disconnection was a result of a tariff category upgrade from “Band B” to “Band A”, leading to a significant increase in monthly electricity bills. Despite ongoing negotiations and a recent payment of N180 million on August 20, EKEDC refused to reconnect the university to the national grid.

The university expressed disappointment and frustration with EKEDC’s actions, stating that they had kept their promise to pay the debt but were still disconnected without notice. The institution appealed to the university community to remain calm and announced that it would ration power supply across the campus until further notice.

The management is taking necessary steps to address the issue and has released a schedule for power rationing to help members of the community plan accordingly. The university’s efforts to resolve the issue with EKEDC are ongoing, but the sudden disconnection has caused inconvenience and disruption to academic and administrative activities.
