The Labour Party (LP) has called on Nigeria’s political class to conduct issue-based campaigns and uphold patriotism, tolerance and national unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party warned politicians against engaging in divisive politics capable of inflaming tensions and undermining the country’s democratic stability.
Labour Party National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, made the appeal while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor and former Governor of old Benue State, Senator Jonah Jang, held in Jos.
Her remarks come as political parties intensify consultations, realignments and mobilisation ahead of the next general elections amid growing concerns over the tone of political campaigns.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, Usman stressed that elections should focus on policies, leadership competence and character rather than personal attacks or divisive rhetoric.
“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” she said.
According to her, Nigerians deserve leaders who unite rather than divide the country, inspire hope instead of fear, and build bridges across political, ethnic and religious lines.
“Our political parties may be different, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together,” she added.
Usman further urged politicians and their supporters to reject inflammatory language and embrace civility, mutual respect and constructive engagement throughout the electioneering period.
“History does not remember those who shouted the loudest. It remembers those who built the strongest institutions, protected democracy and put their country first,” she stated.
She maintained that democracy can only flourish where political disagreements are managed through dialogue and tolerance rather than hostility.
“We must disagree without becoming enemies. Democracy flourishes where there is tolerance, respect for differing opinions and an unwavering commitment to peace,” she said.
Speaking on the occasion of Senator Jonah Jang’s 80th birthday, Usman described the former governor as a patriotic leader whose distinguished military and political career exemplified discipline, courage and dedication to public service.
She noted that Jang’s contributions as a military officer, Governor of Plateau State and senator had earned him a respected place in Nigeria’s democratic history.
“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building,” she said.
The Labour Party chairman also prayed for continued good health, strength and many more years of service for the elder statesman.
