A 21-year-old man has been brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State over his alleged involvement in the theft of a motor vehicle valued at ₦4.8 million. The defendant is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing, brought against him by the police prosecution team following a detailed investigation into the incident.

According to the police prosecutor, the defendant, alongside accomplices who remain at large, conspired to commit the felony within the Lagos judicial division. The prosecution told the court that the suspect unlawfully took possession of the vehicle, which belonged to the complainant, without the owner’s consent or authorization. The court heard that the alleged offense violates relevant sections of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, which penalize conspiracy and the unlawful taking of property.

During the arraignment, the charge sheet was read to the young defendant, who pleaded not guilty to all counts leveled against him by the state. His legal counsel subsequently made an oral application for bail, urging the court to grant his client liberal bail terms pending the determination of the substantive trial, while assuring the magistrate that the accused would not jump bail and would be available to stand trial whenever required.

The presiding magistrate granted the defendant bail in a specified monetary sum, alongside two reliable sureties in like sum. The court mandated that the sureties must provide evidence of gainful employment, proof of tax clearance payments to the Lagos State Government, and verifiable residential addresses within the court’s jurisdiction.

The magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending the complete fulfillment of his bail conditions, after which the matter was adjourned for mention and trial.
