The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kaduna State has strongly refuted recent claims by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai that the party’s entire structure in the state has been dissolved into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a statement signed by the party’s State Chairman, Adamu Idris, the SDP described El-Rufai’s comments as false, misleading, and aimed at creating confusion. Idris emphasized that the party remains solidly united and focused on rebuilding itself as a formidable opposition force, committed to upholding democratic values.
The party recalled that El-Rufai’s brief involvement with the SDP had brought significant internal conflict and unrest. However, they maintained that since his departure, the party has experienced renewed peace, cohesion, and progress. The statement highlighted that the SDP’s grassroots structures remain active and operational across all parts of Kaduna State, contrary to claims of a merger or dissolution.
Firmly rejecting El-Rufai’s claims, the SDP accused the former governor of being undemocratic and self-serving. The statement labeled him “a non-democrat, self-serving desperado, unrepentant bigot and tyranny personified,” asserting that his actions are aimed at causing division rather than fostering unity. The party assured its members and the general public that it would not be derailed by such tactics.
The controversy began when El-Rufai, during a political meeting over the weekend, announced that the SDP in Kaduna had officially merged with the ADC. This statement was backed by the coalition’s Publicity Secretary, Darius Kurah, who said the move was intended to unite opposition forces in the state. The SDP, however, has firmly denied this, asserting its independence and commitment to democratic governance.
