A violent conflict has erupted in the Balogun Market area of Lagos Island, sparking widespread panic after a deadly altercation between Yoruba and Igbo traders reportedly resulted in one fatality and several individuals unaccounted for. According to eyewitnesses and market insiders, the conflict began as a physical fight between two men from the respective ethnic groups. The situation escalated rapidly when both individuals allegedly used weapons during the dispute. The Yoruba trader involved was reportedly stabbed and later died from the injuries sustained.
Following the incident, tensions flared as groups of angry Yoruba youths stormed the market in retaliation. Eyewitnesses say they targeted Igbo traders indiscriminately, forcing many to flee for safety and leaving others untraceable. One trader, who spoke under anonymity, expressed deep concern about the situation: “Many of our Igbo brothers are missing. The market is no longer safe. Yoruba boys have taken over, and we are afraid for our lives.”
The individual suspected of stabbing the deceased has reportedly been arrested and taken to the Lion Building Police Command, where investigations are ongoing. In the meantime, the environment remains tense, with business activities coming to a halt as traders abandon their stalls for fear of being caught in the crossfire.
In response to the growing unrest, several traders, including a known hair vendor called Hairlord, have called on the Lagos State Government and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly. They are urging the authorities to restore peace and prevent further violence that could worsen inter-ethnic relations in the bustling commercial district.
