In a major operational breakthrough, joint security forces operating in Enugu State have successfully dismantled an infamous kidnapping syndicate, securing the safe release of seminarian Lawrence Igbo and another individual, Emmanuel Onwudi. Both victims were forcibly taken on August 2, 2026, during a violent raid at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church situated in Inoyi-Affa within the Udi Local Government Area.
The high-stakes rescue mission was executed through a highly coordinated, intelligence-led initiative involving personnel from the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army under Operation UDO KA, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Enugu State Forest Guard.
During the tactical operation, security forces engaged the gang in a severe gun duel after the criminals resisted arrest, resulting in the neutralisation of one suspect and the apprehension of three other syndicate members, including a high-ranking commander who was intercepted while attempting to flee the state via the Gariki General Area.
In addition to freeing the hostages unharmed, security operatives recovered the complete ransom money previously paid, alongside substantial financial assets totaling $1,000 and ₦785,900 in cash.
Further interrogation of the arrested suspects yielded vital operational intelligence, directing troops to a concealed arms cache located deep within the Umuchingu Ujenike Forest. From this forest hideout, security forces confiscated a significant arsenal consisting of four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special live ammunition.
The suspects were subsequently paraded at the DSS State Headquarters in Enugu, where Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, confirmed that the rescued victims positively identified the detainees as their original captors.
Preliminary findings indicate that the captured commander and his syndicate are connected to numerous abduction rings operating across the South East and North Central regions. Governor Mbah commended the seamless synergy among the military, police, and intelligence services, noting that the victory underscores the power of the state’s modern, technology-driven security framework.
Reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy against violent crime, the state government warned that Enugu remains entirely hostile to criminal networks, declaring that both perpetrators and local informants aiding these syndicates will be tracked down, exposed, and brought to full legal justice.
