Boris Johnson Praises Imo Governor, Predicts Kemi Badenoch as Future UK PM

During a recent visit to Nigeria, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for his efforts to drive economic growth in Imo State, particularly through initiatives like providing 24-hour electricity. Johnson made these remarks at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri, where he commended the governor’s focus on reliable power supply, stating that it was crucial for development and would be even more vital in the future with the growing demand for clean and sustainable energy driven by artificial intelligence.

Johnson also highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and the UK, noting the significant exchange of goods and professionals between the two countries. He mentioned that the UK sends pharmaceuticals, financial services, and automotive parts to Nigeria, while Nigeria sends oil, gas, Nollywood films, doctors, nurses, and tech innovators to the UK.

In a lighthearted moment, Johnson jokingly remarked that while the UK sends former prime ministers to Nigeria, the country receives future UK prime ministers, specifically mentioning Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch. He expressed his confidence in Badenoch’s leadership abilities, suggesting that she has the potential to become the UK’s future prime minister.

Johnson’s visit to Nigeria was despite initial concerns about security, which he dismissed, feeling perfectly safe in the country. He thanked Governor Uzodimma for ensuring his safety and praised the state’s efforts to attract investment and promote economic development. The summit was attended by several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and business leader Aliko Dangote.
