Sokoto Govt Hails Gen. Musa’s Appointment as Defence Minister, Says New Era of Stronger Security Begins

The Special Adviser on Security Matters to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), has hailed the appointment of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (rtd), as Minister of Defence, describing it as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against insurgency, banditry, and widespread insecurity.

 

General Musa’s appointment, forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was confirmed by the National Assembly during the week. His elevation comes just weeks after retiring from service as the nation’s Chief of Defence Staff, a role in which he oversaw critical joint military operations across volatile regions.

 

According to the Sokoto State Government, the new minister steps into office at a particularly fragile period in the nation’s security history, one that demands seasoned leadership, clarity of purpose, and a deep familiarity with the country’s defence challenges. Col. Usman congratulated General Musa, describing the appointment as a reward for years of outstanding service, disciplined leadership, and unwavering dedication to national safety.

 

He noted that General Musa brings with him extensive operational expertise and a strong grasp of Nigeria’s security architecture—qualities that he believes will inspire renewed confidence among citizens. Usman further highlighted the former defence chief’s successful coordination of joint anti-terrorism missions, expressing hope that his experience will translate into stronger cooperation among the armed forces, intelligence units, and other security agencies.

 

He urged the new minister to prioritise intelligence-driven strategies, enhance troop welfare, and adopt modern technologies capable of matching the rapidly evolving methods of criminal groups. According to him, although Nigerians have high expectations, he is confident that General Musa possesses the competence and discipline required to deliver meaningful results.

 

Reaffirming Sokoto State’s readiness to partner with the Defence Ministry, Col. Usman pledged full cooperation in federal efforts to protect lives and property. He assured that the state government will continue to support initiatives aimed at securing communities severely affected by banditry and other violent crimes.
