President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address world leaders at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) General Debate in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
According to the provisional speakers’ roster released by the UN, the Nigerian leader will deliver his national statement during the morning session on the second day of the high-level debate, taking the floor as the tenth speaker around 11:30 a.m. local time (4:30 p.m. Nigerian time).
The session, themed “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all,” will feature participation from over 190 global delegates, including more than 150 heads of state and government.
President Tinubu’s upcoming address marks a return to the UNGA stage following his personal appearance at the 78th session in 2023, after Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the 79th and 80th assemblies in 2024 and 2025.
Beyond his main speech, Tinubu will engage in a series of high-level summits focusing on climate action, pandemic preparedness, and rising sea levels. He is also slated to hold bilateral discussions with outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and potentially U.S. President Donald Trump on the margins of the event.
In addition to promoting his administration’s domestic economic reforms to international investors, President Tinubu plans to use the global assembly to advocate for stronger international cooperation on regional security.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, highlighted that a primary focus of Tinubu’s diplomacy will be securing multilateral support for regional border policing initiatives across West Africa to address porous borders and curb transnational security threats.
