Israel Backs US–Iran Ceasefire but Says Lebanon Excluded from Deal

Israel on Wednesday expressed support for the decision by Donald Trump to pause planned military strikes against Iran, while clarifying that the last-minute ceasefire arrangement does not extend to Lebanon.

The temporary truce, agreed upon Tuesday between Washington and Tehran, came just under an hour before a deadline set by Trump for a potential escalation of attacks against Iran. As part of the agreement, Tehran pledged to ensure the safe movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz during the two-week pause, which is expected to allow room for diplomatic negotiations with the United States. Talks are scheduled to begin on Friday in Pakistan.

In a statement, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country backs the US decision, provided Iran reopens the strategic waterway immediately and halts all hostile actions against the US, Israel, and other nations in the region.

Israel also reiterated its support for efforts aimed at preventing Iran from posing threats related to nuclear weapons, missile capabilities, or regional militancy.

However, Israeli authorities stressed that the ceasefire arrangement does not apply to Lebanon, contradicting earlier remarks by Shehbaz Sharif, who had suggested that the agreement covered all fronts, including Lebanon.

Lebanon became entangled in the conflict after the Iran-backed group Hezbollah launched rocket attacks into Israel, triggering retaliatory military action. The ensuing Israeli offensive, including ground incursions and airstrikes, has reportedly resulted in over 1,500 deaths, according to local authorities.

Israel had earlier urged the United States to take a more direct role in the confrontation with Iran, its longstanding adversary, and initial strikes in February reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
