Police Officers Petition Tunji Disu Over Stalled Promotions and Salary Disparities

A group of dissatisfied officers in the Nigeria Police Force, identified as members of the 2020 intake (53 Regular Course), have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, over what they describe as prolonged neglect and stalled career progression.

In their appeal, the officers complained that despite serving the nation for more than four years, they have not been granted promotions nor received salary increments that reflect their level of experience and seniority.

The officers, who were enlisted on January 10, 2022, stated that they have remained committed to their duties, serving across different commands nationwide with discipline, professionalism, and dedication. However, they said the lack of advancement has led to growing frustration among members of their cohort.

According to them, they have already met the required service duration for promotion but are yet to move to the next rank. They warned that the continued delay is negatively affecting morale within the Force, stressing that promotion plays a vital role in motivation and career development in any structured institution.

They further expressed concern over what they described as an unfair salary system, alleging that officers recruited after their set—specifically those from subsequent intakes—are currently earning the same pay despite having fewer years of service.

The officers argued that such a situation undermines the long-standing principle of seniority, which traditionally influences both rank progression and remuneration in paramilitary organisations. They maintained that years of service should be clearly reflected in both promotion and salary structure.

Consequently, they called on the Inspector General to urgently address their concerns by approving their due promotions and adjusting their salaries in line with their length of service.

Despite their grievances, the officers reaffirmed their loyalty to the Force and pledged continued support for its leadership and vision.

The situation highlights broader concerns about welfare, fairness, and motivation within the Nigeria Police Force, an institution that has long faced criticism over poor working conditions, inadequate pay, and operational difficulties.
