Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress would face a major defeat in the 2027 general elections if the process is conducted in a transparent and credible manner.
Speaking on a television programme, Lawal, who is a member of the African Democratic Congress, alleged that the current administration is working towards establishing a one-party system. He argued that the government would struggle to retain power under a genuinely free and fair electoral process.
When asked to provide evidence for his claims, Lawal insisted that the party possesses supporting data but chose not to disclose it publicly, describing it as internal information.
His remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission, which recently suspended recognition of the party’s National Working Committee led by David Mark and declined to supervise its congresses and convention pending a court decision.
Despite INEC’s stance, the ADC went ahead with its internal activities, including its national convention, which Lawal maintained was successfully conducted. He defended the party’s actions, stating that they were based on legal advice, and dismissed the electoral body’s position as inconsequential.
Lawal further asserted that the party would remain on the ballot and participate fully in the elections regardless of INEC’s position. While noting that the ADC has solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, he emphasised that its immediate focus is to unseat the current government before implementing its policies.
