Suspected Herdsmen Kill Traditional Ruler, Four Others in Benue Community Attack

Fear and unrest have engulfed Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State after a violent attack by suspected armed herdsmen left five people dead, including a traditional ruler, his wife, and their son.

The assault, which occurred late Thursday night, also resulted in multiple injuries, forcing many residents to flee their homes amid fears of further violence.

Olegabulu, a relatively quiet settlement situated along the Agatu–Apa boundary, was reportedly attacked following resistance by youths in nearby communities against an earlier invasion.

A local political figure, who spoke anonymously, linked the incident to a previous confrontation in Atakpa community. He explained that after armed herders launched an earlier attack there and were repelled by local youths, they appeared to have redirected their aggression toward Olegabulu.

According to him, the attackers killed the community leader, his immediate family members, and two others, while several residents sustained gunshot injuries.

He also raised concerns that the assailants remain in the area, allegedly hiding in nearby bushes between Apa and Agatu LGAs, posing an ongoing threat to surrounding communities.

Residents were reportedly caught unprepared, leading to panic and a mass exodus. Many fled overnight, while neighbouring villages have also begun to empty due to fears of similar attacks.

Confirming the development, Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin Ejeh, stated that five people lost their lives and assured that security forces had been deployed to restore order and prevent further violence.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, said detailed information on the incident was still being awaited.
