Omo-Agege Backs Peter Obi for 2027, Says Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Remain Necessary

Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has thrown his weight behind Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, while insisting that he remains a firm supporter of the major economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking on ARISE TV’s The Morning Show on Wednesday, Omo-Agege explained his political stance following his recent departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing concerns about his endorsement of Obi despite having recently praised Tinubu’s economic policies, the former Delta Central senator maintained that his position on the reforms had remained consistent.

He argued that he did not abandon the APC but rather felt abandoned by the party, claiming that both he and more than 230,000 of his supporters in Delta State had been sidelined.

Omo-Agege reiterated his backing for key policy decisions of the Tinubu administration, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the liberalisation of the naira exchange rate, describing them as necessary economic measures that he continues to support.

However, he stressed that those policies were not unique to the APC or President Tinubu, noting that Peter Obi had also advocated similar reforms.

According to him, his support for Obi should not be interpreted as opposition to the policies themselves. Instead, he believes that Obi would continue with the reforms while enjoying greater public trust and confidence among Nigerians who remain sceptical about their implementation.

He emphasized that his views on the economic measures have not changed, adding that he simply feels that under Obi’s leadership, many Nigerians would be more comfortable with the reforms and more confident in their potential to deliver positive results.
