A deadly attack by suspected bandits on Odo-Ere, the administrative headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi State, has claimed the life of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and initially led to the abduction of his daughter.
Sources identified the deceased officer as Mr. Ayo, who was reportedly shot in the head during the assault on the community on Monday.
He was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was subsequently deposited in a mortuary.
During the attack, the gunmen also abducted his eldest daughter and fled into the bush, raising concerns among residents already worried about the deteriorating security situation in the area.
However, relief came for the family and the community when reports emerged that the young woman successfully escaped from her captors in the early hours of Tuesday and returned safely home without injury.
The development sparked celebrations across the community as residents welcomed the news of her safe return.
A community source said the officer died from the gunshot wound he sustained during the attack, while his daughter was taken away by the assailants before later finding an opportunity to escape and reunite with her family.
Meanwhile, security agencies have launched an investigation into the incident. According to a police source, a coordinated operation involving tactical security teams is underway to track down and arrest those responsible for the attack.
