Pope Leo XIV has welcomed the recently announced agreement between Iran and the United States aimed at ending hostilities in the Middle East, describing it as a positive outcome of dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
Speaking during his weekly general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday, the Pontiff praised the efforts of those involved in the negotiations and expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region.
The peace deal, announced earlier this week, marked a significant diplomatic breakthrough between the two countries after months of heightened tensions and conflict.
Reacting to the development, Pope Leo said the agreement demonstrated the value of constructive dialogue in resolving disputes.
“I hope that this agreement will contribute to strengthening mutual trust, security, and stability in the Middle East by promoting paths of dialogue and cooperation between peoples,” the Pope said.
He also expressed gratitude to all individuals and institutions that played a role in facilitating the negotiations, describing their efforts as encouraging and necessary for regional peace.
Beyond the Middle East, the Pope turned attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which he described as a source of deep pain and suffering.
He lamented the devastating humanitarian consequences of the conflict and renewed his call for dialogue aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.
The 70-year-old Pontiff noted that the war, triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction, making it one of Europe’s deadliest conflicts since World War II.
“So many innocent victims, rescuers killed, churches and cultural heritage sites devastated by flames,” he said.
Pope Leo expressed solidarity with families who have lost loved ones, those injured in the conflict and humanitarian workers who continue to provide assistance despite the dangers.
“I am close to those mourning their loved ones, to the injured, and to those who, amidst the violence, continue to serve life with courage,” he stated.
The Pope concluded by urging world leaders to pursue peaceful solutions to conflicts through dialogue and cooperation, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through mutual understanding and respect among nations.
