Nigeria, Russia Move to Deepen Bilateral Ties as New Ambassador Presents Credentials

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Borisenko Evgenievich, on Thursday welcomed Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Russia, Joseph Iji, during an official meeting in Moscow.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by Daria Senyushina, Communications Officer at the Russian Embassy in Nigeria.

According to the statement, Ambassador Iji formally presented copies of his credentials to the Russian official during the meeting, marking an important step in the commencement of his diplomatic assignment.

Senyushina explained that both sides used the opportunity to review key issues relating to the long-standing and cordial relationship between Nigeria and Russia.

The discussions focused on strengthening political engagement between the two countries and exploring ways to expand cooperation in several strategic areas, including trade, economic development, science and technology, humanitarian initiatives, and other sectors of mutual interest.

The meeting also underscored the commitment of both nations to further deepen bilateral ties and enhance collaboration on issues that promote shared development goals.

Nigeria and Russia have maintained diplomatic relations for more than six decades, dating back to the era of the former Soviet Union. The relationship continues to be supported by an active Russian Embassy in Abuja and a Russian consulate in Lagos, which facilitate diplomatic and economic engagements between the two countries.
