The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority has impounded 10 cows for alleged violation of the state’s anti-open grazing law in the Apete area of Ibadan.

The enforcement followed complaints by residents of Arola, a densely populated neighbourhood, over cattle rearing, open grazing and the indiscriminate disposal of animal waste.

The Chairperson of the authority, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to her, the enforcement team, working with security operatives, visited the area in the early hours of Tuesday to investigate the complaints and found them to be substantiated.

Eight cows were impounded at the location, while two additional cows were seized when the team sighted them tied down and grazing openly along the route while returning from the operation.

The authority said the activities contravened the Oyo State Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law, 2019, which regulates livestock production and prohibits open grazing in restricted areas.

It also cited concerns raised by residents over noise and air pollution, as well as environmental and public safety risks associated with keeping cattle in a residential neighbourhood.

The authority stressed that the enforcement was not targeted at legitimate livestock owners but was aimed at ensuring compliance with the law and protecting residents.

It urged members of the public to continue reporting suspected violations, assuring that credible complaints would receive prompt attention.
