Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, three months after leaving the African Democratic Congress.

Lawal announced his defection in Abuja on Tuesday, where he was formally received by the NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and other party leaders.

The former SGF also declared his support for the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal said his decision was influenced by concerns over insecurity, hunger and other challenges confronting Nigerians.

He said Nigerians who were concerned about the country’s situation should support a political platform that, in his view, represented the future.

Lawal added that he looked forward to the 2027 election and expressed his intention to work towards the emergence of Obi as president and Kwankwaso as vice president.

Receiving Lawal into the party, Dickson described him as an experienced politician, mobiliser and activist.

Dickson said Lawal would play a leadership role in coordinating the party’s activities and campaigns in the North-East, while also providing guidance for its operations in the North-Central zone.

Lawal’s move to the NDC comes about three months after he resigned from the ADC.

In his resignation, Lawal alleged that the ADC’s presidential primary had been manipulated to favour former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his supporters. He also alleged that results were altered in some areas where voting had taken place.

The latest defection comes amid ongoing political realignments and preparations by parties and political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
